An 89-year-old Bend resident was critically injured last Friday evening after he neglected to stop at a stop sign on Cooley Road.
Oregon State Police said Donald Richard Johnson stopped in the middle of Highway 20 and an oncoming car hit his vehicle.
Bend police, troopers, and Bend Fire & Rescue medics responded to the crash at the intersection of Highway 20 and Cooley Road around 6:15 p.m.
Investigations revealed Johnson was driving a Toyota Tercel when after disobeying a stop sign, he pulled into the travel lane of Highway 20 and came to a stop.
Trooper Robin Katter said a 20-year-old Sisters woman tried to maneuver her Jeep Wrangler around Johnson’s car but Johnson began to drive away. The Jeep struck the car on the door of the driver’s side.
Johnson and his 77-year-old passenger Julia Johnson were taken to St. Charles Bend by ambulance. Donald was said to be in critical condition, but no other injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, there was a fatal accident on U.S. 30 on Thursday. The multi-vehicle crash closed the highway in both directions about five miles east of Astoria.
In a news release, the Oregon Department of Transportation said at least one person died in the collision near milepost 92.
No further details were made available.
There was no indication that these accidents involved alcohol or other intoxicants. However, many Oregon accidents do. These crashes often result in serious injuries or death and the state can be hard on intoxicated drivers. Even first-time offenders can face jail time and other harsh penalties.
If you have been accused of driving while under the influence of intoxicants, reach out to a Portland DUI lawyer for advice and representation. Whether you were falsely accused or you made a mistake, an attorney can help you to secure the best outcome.
